Some homes feel as though everything arrived at once. Others feel layered gradually over time.
A chair collected years before the table beside it. Books gathered while travelling. Lighting chosen because it changed the atmosphere of a room, not simply because it matched. Spaces like this tend to hold attention differently. They feel more personal, less uniform.
Recently, Architectural Digest featured David and Isabela Grutman’s Miami home as part of their AD Visits series, a modernist residence designed by architect Max Strang with interiors by Gachot Studios and landscape design by Raymond Jungles. The home combines Brazilian influences, sculptural forms, layered materials, vintage pieces, and contemporary design in a way that still feels warm and relaxed despite its scale.
What stood out throughout the home was the sense of variation.
Rooms did not feel overly polished or identical from one space to the next. Sculptural seating sat beside softer textures. Vintage pieces mixed naturally with contemporary architecture. Art, lighting, and collected objects gave the interiors depth without making them feel heavy.
During the AD tour, references to sourced vintage and collected pieces, including furnishings from 1stDibs, reflected a broader appreciation for interiors shaped gradually rather than everything coming from a single showroom.
That approach to interiors seems to resonate more strongly again now.
For a period of time, many homes leaned heavily toward minimalism. Bright spaces, sharp lines, very little interruption. Beautiful in photographs, though sometimes lacking the warmth that makes people want to stay in a room longer.
Collected interiors feel different.
Natural stone beside linen. Softer lighting against darker timber. Pieces with age sitting comfortably within modern spaces. Rooms become more interesting when everything is not perfectly matched.
Travel has likely influenced this too. Boutique hotels, gallery spaces, and architectural homes often feel layered in a quieter, more relaxed way. Objects appear gathered gradually rather than styled all at once.
The atmosphere feels settled.
Perhaps that is what people are responding to most. Interiors that still feel refined, though with enough personality and variation to feel genuinely lived in.
